Under The Balcony

Under The Balcony
Oscar Wilde
O beautiful star with the crimson mouth!
O moon with the brows of gold!
Rise up, rise up, from the odorous south!
And light for my love her way,
Lest her little feet should stray
On the windy hill and the wold!
O beautiful star with the crimson mouth!
O moon with the brows of gold!
O ship that shakes on the desolate sea!
O ship with the wet, white sail!
Put in, put in, to the port to me!
For my love and I would go
To the land where the daffodils blow
In the heart of a violet dale!
O ship that shakes on the desolate sea!
O ship with the wet, white sail!
O rapturous bird with the low, sweet note!
O bird that sits on the spray!
Sing on, sing on, from your soft brown throat!
And my love in her little bed
Will listen, and lift her head
From the pillow, and come my way!
O rapturous bird with the low, sweet note!
O bird that sits on the spray!
O blossom that hangs in the tremulous air!
O blossom with lips of snow!
Come down, come down, for my love to wear!
You will die on her head in a crown,
You will die in a fold of her gown,
To her little light heart you will go!
O blossom that hangs in the tremulous air!
O blossom with lips of snow!

Title: Under the balcony.A very interesting topic beacuse quite a lot of events can take place under the balcony.

Paraphrase:The poem starts of with beautiful imagery each of which is irnoic and foreshadows sadness in a way.
for example "O beautiful star with the crimson mouth!
O moon with the brows of gold!
O ship that shakes on the desolate sea!"
It is shocking to some extent how every adjective is used in the rigt place and makes perfect sense with every noun it clings on to.
"rapturous bird" shows freedom
"desolate sea" shows loneliness

Overall the poem sounds light and blissful until the end where it says:
"You will die on her head in a crown,
You will die in a fold of her gown,"
According to me the poet has lost his lover. It was all pretty and joyful, under the balcony, the birds, the sea(there was a hint of loneliness is the description of the sea though)...
In the end however words such as "tremulous air" and "Lips of snow" are used which adds to the miserable melancholy this poem reveals.

Connotation:
Imagery:
"beautiful star with the crimson mouth"
"moon with the brows of gold"
"crimson mouth"
"daffodils blowIn the heart of a violet dale"
"blossom that hangs in the tremulous air"
Personification:
"beautiful star with the crimson mouth"
"moon with the brows of gold"
"windy hill and the wold"
Metaphor:
"lips of snow"
also I have realized that every non living thing that is in this poem is a metaphor of the poets feelings.
Symbols:
Balcony-Symbolizes the sky(Under the sky)
"heart of a violet dale"-symbolizes lust, sorrow
"desolate sea"-loneliness
"blossom that hangs in the tremulous air"-symbolizes something rare.
Pun:
"O blossom with lips of snow"
blossom: flower, develope
snow: rigid lips (dead)
Mood: the wrods that best describe the mood of the poem are:
"lips of snow"
"desolate sea"
"You will die on her head "
"beautiful star with the crimson mouth"

Attitude: The author adds his little desciptions to what happens under the balcony... A desolate sea daffodils blowing the heart of a violet dale.. a death and her lips of snow.

Shifts: Sorrow was foreshadowed throughout, however the major shift was: O blossom with lips of snow!
Come down, come down, for my love to wear!
You will die on her head in a crown,
You will die in a fold of her gown,
To her little light heart you will go!
O blossom that hangs in the tremulous air!
O blossom with lips of snow!"

Title: After analyzing I realized that the balcony is a sybol for the sky, therefore the author describes everything that happens under the sky. The sadness within happiness, death within life and 'lips of snow'

Theme:The major theme of this poem is that there is joy there is sorrow, love death, birds sea, yet life goes on within this uneven blend.
